Honda CR-V vs. Mazda CX-5: Which Used SUV Should You Buy in 2026?
They are the two smartest used-SUV buys in Canada, and we stock both. Here is how the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 actually differ — and which one fits your life.
The short answer
Buy the Honda CR-V if you want maximum space, the easiest resale, and a vehicle any mechanic in the GTA can service blindfolded. Buy the Mazda CX-5 if you care how a vehicle feels to drive — the CX-5 is quieter, handles better, and its interior feels a class above. Both are reliable, both are great in Ontario winters with proper tires, and both hold their value.
Space and practicality
The CR-V wins on paper: a lower load floor, a bigger cargo area, and rear doors that open nearly 90 degrees — a gift if you are loading child seats in a tight Etobicoke parking garage. The CX-5 counters with a more car-like seating position and rear seats that fold flatter for long items.
Driving feel
This is where the CX-5 pulls ahead. Its steering has real weight, the 6-speed automatic shifts like a conventional gearbox (because it is one), and the cabin is noticeably quieter on Highway 401. The CR-V's CVT is smooth and efficient, but it drones under hard acceleration. For a long commute from Etobicoke to downtown or Markham, many drivers prefer the Mazda.
Fuel economy and running costs
Both sit in the 7–9 L/100 km range in mixed driving. Honda parts are everywhere and inexpensive; Mazda has closed the gap in the last decade and its SKYACTIV engines have a strong reliability record. On either vehicle, budget for a set of winter tires — AWD helps you go, winters help you stop.
What to check on a used example
- Service history: a CARFAX with regular oil changes matters more than trim level. (Our CX-5 shows 11 recorded services.)
- Rust: inspect rear wheel arches and subframes — Ontario salt is unforgiving.
- Recalls: confirm all recalls are closed; we verify this before any car is listed.
- Tires and brakes: a safety-certified car must pass Ontario's standards, but check wear so you are not buying tires next month.
