Bad Credit, New to Canada, First Car: How Used Car Financing Actually Works in Ontario

Your credit score is a starting point, not a verdict. Here is how lenders actually decide, what raises or lowers your rate, and how to set a payment you can comfortably keep.

How lenders look at your application

Lenders weigh four things: income stability (how long at your job), debt load (what you already owe versus what you earn), credit history (paid-as-agreed history helps more than the score alone), and the vehicle itself — newer, lower-kilometre cars are easier to finance than older ones. This is why a newer, lower-kilometre car can be an easier approval than a cheaper but older, higher-mileage one.

What changes your rate

New to Canada or first car?

Many lenders have newcomer programs that look at your employment and down payment rather than a Canadian credit file that does not exist yet. Bring your licence, an employment letter and recent pay stubs. A modest car at a payment you never miss is the fastest way to build the credit history that gets you bank rates on the next one.

G1 drivers — read this

Ontario lenders and insurers generally require a G2 or full G licence to finance and plate a car in your own name. If you are on a G1, the usual path is a licensed co-buyer or waiting until your G2 — talk to us before you fall in love with a car, and we will map out the quickest route.
